| Sir Howard Hodgkin – Born 1932 – British Painter and Printmaker
The rebirth of European art in USA has quite simply continued to push all the boundaries. His work comes directly out of French tradition known as intimism, which coincides with the rise of middle class life as the cultural norm.
His early paintings tend to be made up of hard-edged curved forms in a limited number of colours. Around the beginning of the 70's, his style became more spontaneous, with vaguely recognisable shapes presented in bright colours and bold strokes. His work might be called by some as semi abstract, and often compared to Henri Matisse.
Hodgkin paintings often seek to convey memories of encounters with friends and frequently carry titles alluding to specific places and events such as "Going for a walk with Andrew" Hodgkin himself has said that he paints representational pictures of emotional situations.
