William Mason 1906 - 2002
William Mason ARCA Pastel & oil Painter
I first met William Mason in 1997, when I was introduced to him by one of his star pupils and life long friend., Mary Anne Clark at the McNeill Gallery Pastel Exhibition in 1990.
William Mason's work, or should I say Bill ( he preferred this name) was one of the most distinguished of painters. My gallery tended to deal only in his pastel works but Bill was also a very serious oil painter. Not just a great artist, but also a very talented teacher, whose pupils also achieved great results. Bill often said that he could teach anyone how to paint. His enthusiasm led him to teach well past his retirement age. His favourite media was Oil Pastels, which allowed him to really capture an atmosphere as only a pastel artist can do.
William Mason painted mainly land and seascapes but also figurative works which he delighted in, to capture just that singular moment.
